Workshop on PIDs for physical objects

20.02.2025 | German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam & Online

The use of persistent identifiers (PIDs) is an essential component of an open scientific landscape in the digital age. They improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability (FAIR) of various research-related objects and allow the scientific process to become more transparent and interconnected.

The adoption of PIDs for physical objects such as different types of samples or artefacts has so far been common practice mostly in the earth and life sciences. Broader application could improve the discoverability and accessibility of these resources by placing data in a broader context. Interoperable metadata standards and standardised forms of documentation can promote collaboration between disciplines and increase the reusability of data.

The project ‘PID Network Germany’ cordially invites you to the workshop ‘PIDs for physical objects’ at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam. Different application areas will be presented in this workshop. A combination of informative presentations and concrete discussion impulses will enable an exciting and productive exchange. Different experiences from practices will be discussed with regard to their challenges and possible solutions. To facilitate the implementation of PIDs, best practices and metadata standards for information collection need to be established. The involvement of the scientific community is key to ensure that these practices are relevant and effective. The workshop will also address the drafting of a PID roadmap.

The on-site workshop will take place on Thursday 20 February 2025, from 9:30 am to 4 pm, following the RDA DE 2025 conference. The program will be published shortly and registration will be open.

Participation in the event is free of charge. The preferred language is English. The presentations will also be streamed online.
